Zoo York

The ZooYork brand originates from the Soul Artists of Zoo York movement that became active in New York in the early 1970s when a small group of people swept by a restless creative energy has begun its revolution that still goes on. In the late 1980s, the term Zoo York began to symbolize New York’s underground scene dominated by graffiti artists, breakdancers, skateboarders and punkers. In 1993 the OG skateboarders Rodney Smith, Eli Morgan Gessner and Adam Shatz began to work together and decided to make the first real East Coast skateboarding brand inspired by the life rhythm of New York, naming it Zoo York. Deriving their creative inspiration from the skateboarding, hip hop and graffiti scenes of New York, the Zoo York brand has preserved its original spirit and ranks highly in the present world of skateboarding and hip hop cultures. The basic products that made Zoo York famous were, of course, their skateboards and T-shirts with their distinctive logo and graphics, and above all their skateboarding team that became every skateboarder’s dream thanks to their original style. In the 1990s, the skateboarding scene in America, as well as in Europe and the rest of the world, was growing rapidly, so it was not enough for a professional skateboarder to have just a skateboard and a T-shirt – they had to have shoes signed by a top professional. Zoo York began to manufacture sneakers and what had started as a simple line of skateboards and T-shirts slowly developed into streetwear collections characterized by a military look and urban style. Zoo York is now an esteemed and globally recognized brand, most popular among skateboarders, graffiti artists, hip-hopers and punkers, just like it was the first day. Zoo York still strongly supports the Zoo Crew, comprising New York’s graffiti artists, designers, musicians, new and old skateboarders, and some of the greatest names in the BMX and surfing communities.
